10 Ways To Help A Puppy Crying In The Crate Good Human

7 hours ago Goodhumandogtraining.com Show details

1. When your puppy is vocalizing for no apparent reason, always ensure that those basic needs have been met. Pain– Is the puppy in pain or uncomfortable? Could your puppy be gassy or have a stomachache from treats, overeating, or a food switch?
2. Look for a pattern. Does the behavior occur before mealtime? In the evening? In the middle of the night? Keep a Puppy Notebook with housetraining, socialization, and training notes.
3. Don’t leave your puppy alone only at night. Naptime throughout the day is the perfect time to let him practice being alone. Start by letting your puppy be alone in your sight but several feet away.
4. Keep your puppy’s crate close to you when you sleep. If he doesn’t like the crate, it’s ok to let him sleep close to you outside of the crate. You can try a slower approach during the day.
5. Take advantage of visual barriers. Use sheets on the outside of the crate or x-pen or crate. (I like to put a board that is larger than the crate on top, which holds the sheet out of the puppy’s reach.)
6. Spend more time interacting with your puppy while they are in the crate or x-pen or crate. Too often, all the good stuff happens outside the x-pen. No wonder your puppy cries to be out of the crate or x-pen!
7. Provide novelty and enrichment for your puppy! Let him play on small platforms, tunnels, and boxes. Remove and rotate toys often. Plan sniff walks in a puppy-safe yard, or do a sniff walk inside!
8. Give him comfort. Your new puppy is used to sleeping in a pile with littermates, so sleeping alone is a significant change for him and often a hard one.
9. Start teaching your puppy to sit in front of a person to engage with him. If you reinforce the dog sitting each time you approach, your puppy will have a way to communicate instead of screaming from the x-pen.
10. And finally, don’t leave your puppy to cry it out. When you leave your baby puppy to cry alone, you teach him that you aren’t available to keep him safe.

What To Do When Your Puppy Whines In His Crate PetMD

5 hours ago Petmd.com Show details

Published: Mar 12, 2019
1. Ignore the whining behavior. One of the biggest mistakes that new pet parents make is giving their puppies attention or taking their puppies out of the crate once the whining begins.
2. Pick the right-size crate. Puppies should have enough space in their crates to help them stay comfortable. “The crate must be large enough that the pet can stand up, turn around and play with toys,” says Campbell.
3. Get your puppy comfortable with the crate. Familiarizing your puppy with his crate is one way to help cut down on anxiety and reduce whining. “The first rule is to take your time acclimating your puppy to the crate,” says Victoria Schade, a professional dog trainer and author of “Life on the Leash.”
4. Make sure to provide plenty of potty breaks. Puppies cannot “hold it” for as long as adult dogs, so it’s a pet parent’s responsibility to make sure that young puppies have ample opportunities to go outside—even in the middle of the night.
5. Make sure to consider crate placement. Where you have your puppy’s crate located may be a factor in whether or not he whines. “Crate placement can definitely impact a dog's reaction to it,” says Schade.
6. Give your puppy plenty of exercise. To stop your puppy from whining in the crate, don’t underestimate the power of playtime. “Make sure your puppy is getting lots of exercise and attention outside of the crate,” says Dr. Coates.

20 Tricks For Crate Training A Puppy To Make It Easier For

6 hours ago Topdogtips.com Show details

1. Make Your Puppy’s Crate Inviting and Familiar. To get your puppy to use the crate, you need to make the crate look more appealing. At first glance, the crate may appear overwhelming or scary to your puppy, so add a cozy blanket or puppy toy so it becomes soft and inviting.
2. Create a Positive Association with the Crate. Anytime you want your puppy to enter or use their crate, make sure that you are doing so in a positive mindset.
3. Cover Your Puppy’s Crate. For some puppies, the crate can induce anxiety if they can see their surroundings but not interact with them. These puppies may whine, scratch at the crate, or bark.
4. Get the Right Sized Crate. A dog will rarely potty in the same area that they sleep in. The exception to this rule is when they have been forced to hold it for too long or they have an upset tummy or bladder infection, or when dog crate size is wrong (too large).
5. Abide by Maximum Crate Time Guidelines. Creating a positive association with the crate also means not overusing the puppy crate. Imagine if you were put in a cage for 8 hours at a time every day – it's likely you wouldn’t want to go in there either.
6. Don’t Give in to Whining. Most new puppy parents are ready to throw the towel in on puppy crate training after the first night of crying or whining. It's inevitable that this might happen since crating is a new thing for the young dog, but stick with it without giving in; it will get easier.
7. After Potty Breaks Take Puppy Back to the Crate. As mentioned above, after coming inside in the middle of the night after puppy's potty break, put your dog right back into their crate.
8. A Tired Dog is a Good Dog. When leaving the house or at bedtime, if you find that your puppy barks excessively or gets themselves all worked up, try exercise.
9. Move Your Napping Puppy to the Crate During the Day. To get your puppy used to their crate, move them into the crate when they nap during the day. For example, if your dog falls asleep in the living room, carefully pick them up and put them in their crate.
10. Praise Calm and Quiet Puppy Crating. Studies have proven that dogs respond to positive reinforcement much better than they respond to negative reinforcement.

How To Crate Train Your Dog In Nine Easy Steps – American

7 hours ago Akc.org Show details

1. Choose the Right Crate for Your Dog. Finding the best crate for your dog is key. “You want to get one that’s durable, comfortable, and flexible with whatever training you’re doing,” says Flayton.
2. Establish the Proper Mindset. “The more the dogs associate the crate with a relaxed mindset, the more they’ll ultimately enjoy hanging out in there,” says Flayton.
3. Determine How Your Dog Will Be Most Comfortable. Some people use dog beds or towels to create a comfy environment, but that may not always be the best option.
4. Give the Dog a Treat After They Go Into the Crate. Once again, positive association rules. One of Flayton’s favorite tricks is giving the dog a KONG toy filled with peanut butter that she’s put in the freezer.
5. Keep an Eye on the Time. Your dog needs time outside the crate to play, eat, and use the bathroom. Dogs don’t want to soil where they sleep, but if there’s too long of a stretch without a walk, they might end up doing so.
6. Play Crate Games. The dog shouldn’t see the crate as a negative place. To ensure this, incorporate the crate into fun games where the pup goes in and out of the open crate at their own will.
7. Keep Your Dog “Naked” “Dogs should never, ever have collars or tags or anything on when they’re in the crate,” warns Flayton. If the tag gets caught in the crate the dog could strangle.
8. Set Your Dog Up for Success. Once you are ready to give your dog more time inside the crate, do it in small steps. “You don’t want to go out to dinner for six hours,” cautions Flayton.
9. Be Patient. Prepare yourself for at least six months of training. There will be ups and downs since dogs aren’t linear learners, but success will come, says Flayton.
